Just keep the target in the smaller inner circle, once you have a lock, change to normal cockpit view and fire. If you don't get a lock within 10 seconds (Sidewinder) or 15 seconds (R-60/R-60M) you have to start over. The missile will guide itself towards the target, leaving the pilot free to manoeuvre the aircraft and evade any anti-air defences. If you take a look at the missile stat card I posted above, you'll see that the missile has an explosive mass of 63.5 kg, which puts it on par with the American "Tiny Tim" and the Russian S21 "Tiny Ivan" unguided rockets. Then, just circle the battlefield until you find a target, and then dive on him. You'll need to assign key bindings for both. Remember guys, I just want to reiterate that even though the TV-guidance method is now disabled as it should be, this weapon system is still extremely lethal. Some planes and AGMs however have IR or thermal imaging and can be used at night and have better targeting quality. They allow the ability to steer the projectile to engage even moving targets. You need to lock your target in the circle and then launch AAM. speed of aircraft during attack run: After entering missile launch zone, launch missile after: 400 kph (249 mph) 27.4 sec, 500 kph (311 mph) 18.8 sec, 600 kph (373 mph) 12.6 sec, 700 kph (435 mph) 7.87sec, 800 kph (497 mph) 3.58sec, 900 kph (559 mph) 0.00 sec. Read this section carefully, improperly setting up the weapons selector can lead to the inability to use any weapons. 3.) Add it back if they ever go more modern to the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II literally a waist of a missile or would they prefer unguided missiles in that era. Weapons selector mode is enabled, only the machine guns are being fired by the "Fire primary weapon" key. In the example below the P-47D-28 would usually have to drop its two 1,000 lb bombs first, however with the weapons selector the 500 lb bomb can be dropped first, if desired. All this makes targeting and guidance much easier and even allows for moderate changes of aircraft movement at the same time. Sparrows also seem to be rather hit and miss (pardon the pun). A "Weapon selection on" message will appear at the bottom of the screen, A ">" symbol will appear next to the selected primary and secondary weapon. The final step is to determine how long it takes from the moment the aircraft enters the missile launch zone to the launch point, a simple calculation: Where TL= the elapsed time in seconds from the moment that the aircraft enters the missile launch zone to the moment the missile should ideally be launched. I can here some strange noise like beep beep and I push the lock on button but nothing locks on??? I get that, but when I click Alt+X I only see the circle for a second. Sometimes they just don't track, even though I have a radar lock, and if the target is any distance below the horizon or you are below 1000m, forget it. IR missiles only have 1 circle if they have a caged seeker, and 2 if they do not. The weapons selector can be used to allow either all guns, or the selected guns to be fired with the "Fire primary weapon" key. I still have buttons set for MGs and cannons, since I find that useful for mixed armament aircraft. I'm not going to bother explaining this method much, because it's so easy and IMO overpowered that anyone can master it extremely quickly. Introduction, Pre-UseInformationand General Specs, 2. Where T = the time until your aircraft is within radar range and X = the speed of your aircraft, in kph. The weapons selector can be enabled by pressing either the "Switch primary weapons" or "Switch secondary weapons" key; and can be deactivated by pressing the "Exit selected weapon mode" key. Because your radar is pointing forwards, you essentially guide the missile by pointing your aircraft directly at the target. 2. Once we know T, we candetermine the distance of the aircraft from the target at the moment of launch: Where D = the distance of the aircraft from the target at the moment of launch. So, I just got my first top-tier which is the german Mig-21MF, and just barely got the first missiles which are the R3-S (through literal torture of a grind, as the cannon is useless on this thing). I get the whole OP thing, remembering back to when the IS3 was released and literally quite impossible to pen effectively from the front and the havoc that ensued with the player base. Thus, the equation for horizontal distance until the rocket motor burns out is as follows: Where DHis the horizontal distance that the missile travels over the time period and AAvgis the average acceleration of the rocket over that time period. Distance from target on launch: Vertically lead the target: 0.5 km (0.31 mi) 0.06km (0.04 mi), 1.0 km (0.62 mi) 0.11 km (0.07 mi), 1.5 km (0.93 mi) 0.26km (0.16 mi), 2.0 km (1.24 mi) 0.44 km (0.27 mi), 2.5 km (1.55 mi) 0.68 km (0.42 mi). Essentially, you are "guiding the missile in" by showing it the target locked on radar. To obtain the best results using this method, climb to an altitude of at least 3 km (1.86 mi), out of SPAAG range, and a higher altitude then most aircraft spawn in. This view gets activated when you push the assigned weapon lock on button, and you can only see it in gunner's view! I recommend you only fire when your target is slow, travelling fairly straight, not turning as hard as it can (though if it's doing this vertically it will bleed energy and that's a great time to fire) and when your seeker isn't on the edges of its gimbal track, as it will easily lose guidance while you're still finding a lock. The missile will guide itself towards the target, leaving the pilot free to manoeuvre the aircraft and evade any anti-air defences. We'll learn what missile statistics mean, all the missile types in the game, how they interact with your radar and how they are used in this conclusive guide to help you dominate the skies of high tier jet gameplay. This is now fixed, however. You are better off to change to gunners view for a quick lock-on, there you see circles indicating that you activated the lock-on sequence. It is recommended to check your surroundings and ensure that there are no enemies in the vicinity, as it can be significantly more difficult to attempt to control both missile and aircraft at the same time. Beam riding missiles are operated using a radar or laser beam to guide them to the target. These missiles were eventually largely phased out in favour of ARH or active radar homing missiles, which are still widely used today along with all-aspect IR missiles. I guess this represents seeker cooling time, but don't quote me on that. However, unless things are different in actual battles I did manage to use missiles on Test Flight in SB difficulty. I believe that this user mission is still available; in order to download it, follow the steps in the spoilerbelow: Step 2: Download the AGM vs Tu-4 user mission. If we want to find when to launch the missile, we'll have to work backwards a little bit. I am doing exactly as described in the video but the missile wouldn't fire. I forgot to take into account the acceleration due to gravity. sniperNZSAS, September 3, 2020 in General Discussion. When the weapons selector is activated a number of things will happen. Unlike later missiles, they can't home in on something like the heat of the friction on the front of an aircraft. Why, you might ask? These are the key binds you are used to using for your various primary and secondary weapons. The missile would not fire in gunners view, I filed a bug report about it. Now, onto some general specifications for this missile system: @Iron_physikdid some data mining and found out some more info for y'all. SARH missiles were first introduced in the 1960s and were the next leap in air combat, establishing BVR (beyond visual range) engagements as the future and BVRAAMs as the main weapon. Once set up, it allows the player to cycle through their primary and secondary weapons, and fire them using the same bound key. When the weapons selector is activated all other weapon controls are disabled, this means that (for the example to the right) the Phantom's bombs cannot be dropped using their normal key bind. Yes, that's a way of doing it, but there's still the option . Only the ATGM cursor. BUT. By At that point, the horizontal distance the rocket travels is determined by its horizontal velocity alone: Now, we can set up an equation for horizontal distance: Once we know "T," we cancalculate how much the missile drops during this period. if you have bombs on Space Bar, one could assign "Fire Secondary Weapon" also to Space Bar, because as said, whatever weapon firing it normally is assigned to will be overridden while in Weapon Selection Mode. I recommend you mess around with the controls to make it easier to control them: Some of the earliest AAMs post-WWII used to require manual aiming from the pilot to guide the missile into the target. 1. chillobreeki 2 yr. ago. Well, you can track the bull pup missile using the same keybinding. I've found that the best results can be achieved when the missile hits the target while the aircraft is roughly4 km (2.49 mi) (the max distance at which you can still see the flare) out. Post it in the comments below, and I'll overview and and possibly add it to the OP. What do I need to do? I've found myself at the wrong end of a couple R-60s and they only fired when I was around 1km from them. Once this is done you'll hear the growling tone and the missile is ready to lock. The trick is setting the same key to both "fire guns" and "fire primary weapon". For jets you can probably fire a bit further if they have their exhaust pointed at you. If there is more than one secondary weapon of the same type (e.g. The bombs and rockets can be used independent of the missiles. Even if you get close to your target, and I mean as close as a couple of hundred meters, there is significant drop of the rocket, just like the Tiny Tim, so aiming in SB is almost similar to using Tiny Tims. Exactly. There is no tracking camera or "TV-view" for the tracking of the rocket. Operational Method 2: TV-Guidance METHOD IS NOW DISABLED! To prepare another shot you have to do it all over again. Any Gs over this and the missile will simply not fire. Operational Method 2: TV-Guidance (AB/RB ONLY). Why would you get a lock in one view and fire in a different view??? IR missiles are the main WVRAAM used since the onset of missile technology in the early 1950s. Air-to-air missiles or AAMs for short are missiles fired from aircraft for the purpose of destroying another aircraft. Archived post. The rest of the time, it says "load factor too high" and doesn't fire!! The the two consoles are essentially the same. Then again, my key binds are all a mess, because we keep on having to add new things every patch. Privacy Policy. Make sure your within about 3 km otherwise it locks on but wont fire. A direct hit will usually knock out any vehicle. The aircraft points a target-illuminating laser onto the desired target and when the missiles is fired it will fly automatically towards the laser point on the target. It's something I do to my series X and my 360 regularly to keep them for overheating and causing frame rate issues like this. The thing is, you do not have to use the guidance system at all. I did exactly that, assigned one button to lock on and one to fire but nothing happens. Just how you just said it. https://warthunder.com/en/tournament/replay/366038188371661779. You should leave these untouched if you have already set them up. Thanks to @Iron_physik's data, we know the average velocityof the missile: 479 m/s. 1. skyrimmemer04 2 yr. ago. So, this is what I don't understand, I make sure I go in a super straight line, make sure I don't move while trying to fire the damn missile, and I literally press fire 20 times and many times this is not enough and the missile is not fired!! Launch range: Maximum range that the missile can travel before self-detonation. On ps4 it's a combo (l2 & r1, I think), si may be it's a combo on xbox? I'm just going to briefly touch on how to set up the missile controls. As soon as the missile impacts, pull off immediately. MCLOS guided missiles are typically guided either by physical connection to the launch platform by a wire, or by radio waves. 20112023 Gaijin Games Kft. Don't have the jet, but still really want to try out the missile system? I've re-assigned by "fire air-to-air missile" key and it still doesn't fire. However, it was soon learnt after experience gained in the Vietnam War that guns were still a useful asset to an aircraft's weapon suite, and so many modern fighters today still carry guns in some capacity, though it is true to say the art of modern air combat is defeating the opponent using your radar and AAMs. In War Thunder, television-guided missiles refer to a class of missile guided by "optical contrast seekers". Select Secondary Weapon (to get into the mode and cycle through): SHIFT + RMT Fire Secondary Weapon: RMT (outside of mode, I have it assigned to MGs) Exit Weapon Selection Mode: CTRL + RMT Best regards, Phil Report post Posted September 3, 2020 Try this. Some more advanced helicopters have the additional option of locking the stabilized sight to a moving target, thus allowing semi-autonomous guidance of the missile. The default keybinds for manual missile guidance will prevent you from manoeuvring your aircraft with the keyboard at the same time. To first understand how AAMs really work in War Thunder, let's take a look at their stat cards in-game. You're going to be looking for the black silhouette of an enemy tank to appear. These vehicles describe the jumbo syndrome better than the jumbo itself. The "Switch secondary weapons" key can be pressed to activate the weapons selector and switch between launching the different suspended armaments. However, I've done extensive testing, and I believe that my calculations are accurate to within a few seconds. To begin with, familiarise yourself with the following controls: To set up the weapons selector, you should first bind the "Fire primary weapon" control. In real life they lock on a target and follow heat sources. I don't think the missiles are working realistically. Afaik RB and SB share the same missile physics and mechanics. This is the control which will fire your selected primary weapon (usually your guns), so you should bind it to the same key you usually use for your guns (left mouse button by default). Weapons selector mode is enabled, with AIM-9G Sidewinders selected. That was only once. For more information, please see our Note that in-game these guidance systems might work differently than their respective real counterparts or the missiles might use a different guidance system than in reality. Weapons selector mode is enabled, only the cannons are being fired by the "Fire primary weapon" key. Because they are only passively cooled, they are not very sensitive and so need a considerable heat source to lock onto, and the hottest part of an aircraft is the engine exhaust. Scan this QR code to download the app now. If you aren't, the missile won't lock. So as you see, up to distances of about 1.5 km, you don't really have to lead the target that much. You need a few seconds (around 5-6 seconds) for the missile to work. These early missiles have a radar sensor in the rear of the missile that detects the radar beam of your aircraft. Tried it out, and it works. As for the drop of the rocket, you're also correct. The larger green square shows the limits of your camera, the smaller green square shows the firing limits of your missiles. I do plan to do this; unfortunately, atm, my recording software is broken. I made some smaller calculations to see how far the missile goes in realility above the ground:boring maths: 27 seconds flight time until self destruction, Speed during self destruction: 800kph ->795kph avg speed of the plane ->> 220m/s, 220m/s * 27s ->plane traveled 5940m rocket explodes 7000m away from plane according to data, so the rocket has a average speed of 479m/s over a distance of close to 13km. Finally, bind the "Exit selected weapon mode" control, this will restore the weapon controls mode to the standard mode. Remember, you're aircraft will be mostly traveling in a straight line while you're guiding the missile, making you easy food. Here is a screenshot of the assigned controls you need to activate the "lock" and keep the target inside the smaller circle - the activation will "growl" and when locked, it will change tone..you then fire. 1. Once the motor burns out,the horizontal acceleration is zero. You're using an early close-range missile. After a missile of this type is launched, the gunner or pilot watches the motor or tracer components of the missile and sends correcting guidance commands to keep the projectile on target. In War Thunder, this is represented by a single grey circle, showing the missile's detection cone. This method allows you to have better visibility on your target and the whole battlefield in general as you guide the missile in. During the first stage of the flight, the missile has to either rely on inertial guidance, act like a SARH missile, or be course-corrected by Datalink from the aircraft. Might help when you can't use gunner view of whatever reason (dead gunner, for example). Go to camera view, toggle thermal to find targets easier. As there are multiple types of air-to-air missile available (AIM-9G Sidewinders and Skyflashes), the name of the selected weapon has been displayed. While hard to use and often unrewarding, these missiles can be really useful in dogfights where the enemy doesn't expect it or in head-ons where all the missiles at the BR ranges these missiles are used are rear-aspect - killing someone with a missile in a head-on often takes people by surprise, and they can be quite fun - I just can't recommend them to beginner pilots as they are not easy to use.
